Using this website

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

Our mission is to have an accessible, dynamic, top quality website that meets the needs of Wiltshire citizens. We will develop one source of accurate, up-to-date service information that can be easily accessed by the public whether self-serving, via the contact centre, or face to face at an office. We are continuously carrying out usability testing to test the effectiveness of the website for finding information and using the site to carry out transactions.

The website is supported by the Web team.

This website contains information about all the services, schemes and projects offered by Wiltshire Council. To help you get the most from the website, there are a number of features to get you to the information you need as quickly as possible.

Homepage

The homepage consists of a series of boxes containing key information and links about individual services.

You can drag these boxes around the page by clicking on the grey title bar of each box, holding your mouse cursor down and dragging the box to a new position on the screen. In that way, you can ensure the boxes of most relevance to you are at the top of the page.

You can also remove any box that contains information you are not interested in by clicking on the “X” in the top right corner of each box.

If you close a box by mistake, you can re-instate it by clicking on the “Customise your homepage” button at the top of the screen.

Your computer will remember changes you make such that next time you visit the page you will see the homepage customised to your preferred layout.

We will be introducing more boxes covering other key service areas as the website develops.

Navigation

The main website navigation is on the left. By default, it shows the local navigation around a particular section of the website; however, you can always get back to the main navigation for the whole website by clicking on the “Main menu” tab.

On the homepage, the default navigation shows links to the major service areas of the website by which you can Apply for a service, Book an appointment, Report a problem or Pay a bill. Clicking on the “Main menu” tab brings up the list of the major sections of the website.

Broken links

Please report broken links to the Web Team at webteam@wiltshire.gov.uk

Local information

In some parts of the website, the information about a service varies according to where you lived. On these pages, there are a series of tabs corresponding to the North, South, East and West of the county. Clicking on these tabs will show information specific to that area.

On these pages, you can enter your postcode and address, either by clicking on the “Select address” tab (where available) or on the “Localise this page” button at the top of the page.

Once you have chosen an address, the website will remember it so that where appropriate, it always shows information specific to your location.

Security questions on forms

You are asked to complete a simple question before submitting our forms which is called a ‘captcha’. This is to make sure that the form is being submitted by a person and not by an automated machine.

Shortcut URLs

Shortcut URLs (such as www.wiltshire.gov.uk/recycling) can be created to provide an entry point directly into specific parts of the Wiltshire Council website and are helpful for campaigns and publicity material. If you would like a shortcut to your area of the website to be set up, please contact the Web Team. The page must be published before a shortcut address can be set up.

Shortcut addresses should be meaningful, so:

  • words in lower case
  • no hyphens
  • no underscores
  • no acronyms
  • use Plain English in the briefest description possible eg: www.wiltshire.gov.uk/roads
  • no separate domain names (eg: www.wiltshiretreepreservation, www.recyclinginwiltshire)
