Broadchalke footway works

Broad Chalke footway 1

New Footway - The Causeway, Broad Chalke

Work will soon be starting on the construction of a new footway along The Causeway in Broad Chalke.  The villagers of Broad Chalke supported by Broad Chalke Parish Council have long held a desire to improve safety for pedestrians using The Causeway.

Broad Chalke Parish Council and its representatives succesfully raised the funding to construct the footway link.  The proposals for a footway link were supported by Wiltshire Council through the South West Wiltshire Community Area Transport Group, who facilitated the design works.

The existing carriageway is not wide enough to accommodate a footway however the adjacent landowner has kindly dedicated sufficient land free of charge.

The scheme will see the removal of the existing road side hedge and a temporary stock proof fence erected.  A two metre wide footway will then be constructed.  Once this is complete a permanent stock proof fence will be installed and a new hedgerow planted.

In addition a section of land will be cleared adjacent to the existing triangle of land opposite the Community Hub to facilitate the creation of a village green.

The plans showing the general layout of the scheme can be accessed on the right hand side of this page.

Pre-construction works to remove the hedgerow and erect the temporary fencing commenced in advance of the main construction works on Monday 15 October 2018.

The construction work will commence on 5 November 2018 and it is anticipated that it will take 12 weeks to complete.

Construction work will temporarily cease over the The Causeway will be closed to traffic between the Church Car Park and North Street.  Vehicles will not be permitted to travel through the closed sections and a fully signed diversion route will be in place.  Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained, however cyclists may be asked to dismount whilst travelling through the closed section of road.

Plans of the diversion route can be accessed on the right hand side of this page.

Vehicular access will be maintained for residents living within the extent of the closures, however the arrangements will vary depending on the layout of the closure as the work progresses.

Service 29 - the bus stops on High Street near Broad Chalke Community Hub /Queens Head Public House will be closed.  Passengers should use the bus stop near the Church/Old School on South Street for the duration of the works.

Construction work will temporarily cease over the Christmas period and the Causeway will be opened to traffic at the end of the day on 21 December 2018.  The closure will be reinstated on 2 January 2019.
