Household recycling centre reopening FAQs

Find out more about the reopening of household recycling centres

Not all sites are open seven days a week and all sites are operating different hours. Please check your postcode and opening times before you travel.

We are operating a postcode entry system to our household recycling centres (HRCs) to ensure social distancing and limit the number of people on site at any time. As per the table below, Wiltshire residents can only visit a Wiltshire HRC on the days that correspond to the first part of your postcode. For example, if your postcode starts in BA12, you can only visit the sites on Monday 18 May, Wednesday 20 May, and so on, as detailed in the table.

You can visit any Wiltshire site you choose, so while you are limited by the days you can attend, you can attend any Wiltshire household recycling centre on these days,  though please check the opening times (listed below) before you set off. You may be asked for proof of address.

Frequently asked questions about the reopening of household recycling centres

We have followed the government advice at all times, and previously that advice explained that trips to HRCs were not essential journeys. Following new advice, we have reopened nine of our HRCs with social distancing measures in place to protect our staff and residents.

Close

There are likely to be long queues to access the HRCs, with waits of several hours expected at some sites. If the queues are very large, you may be asked to go home and visit the site at a later time or date. In opening the sites we need to ensure that they are safe for both staff and residents using the sites. Social distancing measures mean that most sites have reduced the number of parking spaces by more than 70%, so the number of people using the site at one time is significantly reduced.

Please resist the temptation to queue outside the sites before they are scheduled to reopen, as you may be moved along by traffic marshals.

Close

The household recycling centres in Amesbury and Salisbury are located on the same roads as, or next to, essential businesses, which are still operational. Additional queuing, which is expected following the reopening of the sites, is likely to affect access to these essential businesses. Opening during the weekends and evenings should reduce any risk of queues interrupting access to these businesses.

Close

In opening the sites we need to ensure that they are safe for both staff and residents. Social distancing measures mean that most sites have been required to reduce the number of available parking spaces by more than 70%, so the number of people who can safely use the site at one time is significantly reduced.

We have kept Stanton St Quintin HRC closed as the number of car parking spaces has been significantly reduced. This, along with the already difficult traffic management issues at the site, means that we cannot safely open the site at this time without the risk of significant queues on the B4122 road, which is also close to the M4 J17 slip road. This will be kept under review and the site will reopen when the traffic management risks can be effectively managed. We recognise that this will be frustrating for local residents.

People who would usually use Stanton St Quintin should travel to an alternative site such as Purton, Melksham or Lower Compton.

Close

We have followed government guidance at all times, and the guidance was originally that trips to reopened HRCs were for essential journeys only. That guidance has now changed, and so our advice has changed - a visit to a HRC is a reasonable excuse for a journey outside the home. However, please adhere to the postcode entry system and check opening times before you travel.

Close

The materials you can take vary depending on the site – find out more. All sites will not be able to take soil or rubble, plasterboard, textiles or asbestos until further notice.

Close

No, we are not offering compost collection at present.

  • You must stay at least 2m away from other people at all times. Please follow staff instructions and signs on site to maintain social distancing at all times.
  • A maximum of one person per vehicle. Other people can be in the vehicle, but they are not able to get out of the car - only one person can get out of the car to ensure social distancing and to keep our staff and residents safe. We'll review this after the initial opening period. Please note that our teams on site cannot help you upload waste, so please only bring waste that can be carried on your own by one person.
  • You cannot enter a HRC on foot.
  • The number of parking spaces on each site is reduced to maintain social distancing.
  • No trailers.
  • No large vans (3.5 tonnes and over).
  • Staff cannot help you to move your waste – please do not ask them.

If you do not comply with social distancing guidance, you will be asked to leave the HRC and the site may have to close temporarily.

You should wear your own gloves when you visit a HRC and dispose of your gloves carefully. Please stay at least 2m away from other people at all times and do not ask staff members to help you move your waste. On your return from the HRC, please remember not to touch your face and to wash your hands for 20 seconds on arrival at your destination.

Please follow government advice at all times.

Yes. A postcode entry system is in place. Please see the top of this page for details.

  • There will also be a limit to the number of vehicles allowed on site at any one time, and this will vary from site to site – please follow the signs and advice from staff on site. The number of vehicles allowed on each site will be significantly fewer than normal, so you can expect long delays, potentially of several hours.
  • One person per vehicle. Please remember to stay in your vehicle while queuing and do not leave your vehicle until it is necessary to get out. Other people can be in the vehicle, but they are not able to get out of the car - only one person can get out of the car to ensure social distancing and to keep our staff and residents safe. Please note that our teams on site cannot help you upload waste, so please only bring waste that can be carried on your own by one person.
  • You cannot enter a HRC on foot.
  • No trailers.
  • No large vans (3.5 tonnes and over).

You must not attend an HRC if you are:

  • Extremely vulnerable and are remaining at home for shielding purposes.
  • Symptomatic with coronavirus (COVID-19).
  • In a 14-day household isolation.

See the stay at home and social distancing guidance.

You can expect queues to be long, potentially with waits of several hours. Once the sites reopen we may be able to provide more information on when the sites are less busy. Please check the website and our social media channels before travelling for updates.

Yes, we will have marshals helping to manage the queues at all sites.

Journeys to household recycling centres should only be undertaken if your waste or recycling cannot be stored at home safely or disposed of safely by other means. Please store any non-hazardous waste at home; or, if you can put your recycling in the usual kerbside collections, we’d strongly recommend you do so. If you have large or bulky items, we’re still collecting these from your home for a small charge – find out more.

Yes, please bring your van permit when you visit the site. This should be displayed on your dashboard for site staff to see however they will not be stamped.

At present, all vehicles 3.5 tonnes and above are not allowed to access the HRCs. This is because space on site has been limited to allow for adequate social distancing.

If you do not have a permit for your van you will not be allowed to visit the site. Find out more and how to apply for a permit.

An online booking system, which allows you to book a time slot to visit a household recycling centre, is currently being developed by us and will be put in place when the system has been fully developed and tested. We will ensure that residents are aware of the scheme before it is implemented. In the meantime, we are operating a postcode entry system - please see above for more details. Please only visit your local site on the days allocated to your postcode. You can visit any site that is open on the days of your postcode entry. Please check the opening times and restrictions before travelling. Close
