Repay a housing benefit overpayment
About this service
If you are still receiving payment for Housing Benefit, then an agreement can be set up to set a level of deduction from the benefit payments. The minimum deduction taken is £9.75 a week.
If you are not in receipt of Housing Benefit you can pay back a Housing Benefit overpayment by contacting your local office to set up an arrangement and then pay by any of the following methods,:
Credit/debit card (by telephone)
- Using the 24 hour automatic payment line on 0300 4560119 using Option 4 ‘Housing Benefit overpayments’.
Internet Banking
- Use our Online Payments facility. Payments can be made using a debit or credit card. Please ensure you use the third option which is Housing Benefit payment.
In person at a Post Office/Bank/Building Society
- Using payment slips requested from the Housing Benefit Office
By post (To the address below)
- Cheques should be made payable to Wiltshire Council. Quote your invoice number, name and address on the back and send to the address of your local office.
Standing Order/Direct Debit
- The information you need is Bank: HSBC, Address: 46 Fore Street, Trowbridge, Wiltshire BA14 8EL, Sort Code: 40-44-33, Account no.: 51460021 and quote Invoice number. Contact your local office for any forms.
Please note that you cannot make an overpayment in person.
This service is free, as long as you keep up the payments.
If you have only paid part of the amount then an agreement must be set up to pay the remainder.

- You will have received this with the overpayment invoice.
