In December 2006 we hosted a “Break Down the Barriers” event at the Civic Hall in Trowbridge. Having had more time to consult with employees of WCC and district councils, community groups and public sector organisations, we decided to do things differently in 2007, all working together to create maximum impact throughout Wiltshire. The chosen message was “no barriers”.
“no barriers” was the message resonating across Wiltshire on 3 December 2007. Events to mark the International Day for Disabled People were focused on promoting disability equality and breaking down the barriers faced by disabled people. These are not just physical barriers; they are more often hidden barriers, about communication and about people’s attitudes and prejudices.

A huge variety of events and activities involving community groups, councils and other public sector organisations, schools and libraries, took place right across Wiltshire, coordinated by Wiltshire County Council. An ‘after-event-feedback’ report is available.

These “no barriers” days must not stand in isolation. We all need to continue working together to promote Disability Equality. When barriers are identified, actions need to be taken to remove them if possible.
