At the heart of any archive service are its collections - the records which individuals or bodies of all kinds have chosen to loan or give to the archive.
We recommend that before you get in touch with us, you take a look through these pages, to see if the answers to your enquiry can be answered in here. However, if they do not give the answers you need, you are of course welcome to contact us.
About the records tells you about the many different kinds of record we hold, including images of examples.
Archive catalogues takes you to our on-line catalogue, launched in October 2007. This only contains about 20% of our holdings at present, and excludes the Wiltshire Wills which have their own catalogue detailed below. Please note that the majority of our catalogues are also available at http://www.a2a.org.uk.

Probate records, such as wills, administration records, and inventories, have an on-line catalogue which you can consult free of charge, together with a quantity of digital images of the archives. The Wiltshire Wills pages contain lots of background information which may help in using the catalogue. The image on the left shows the will of a sailor, 1745 |
Our on-line research guides allow you to go into depth about how the records can be used for various kinds of research including family history, house history, local history and so on.
Restricted records indicates which records may not be available for use for various reasons, although it should be stressed that the Archive service must abide by the Freedom of Information Act.
