Different kinds of maps survive in considerable numbers from the 17th century. The principal categories are commercial, estate, enclosure, tithe and Ordnance Survey. There is no common scale to these maps until the arrival of the Ordnance Survey in the 19th century. Most important of all the coverage is uneven until the Ordnance Survey, and therefore what maps may exist for one village or town will not necessarily be available for another.

For further details of what we hold please consult the on-line catalogue available at:

Please note that this catalogue will be useful for estate maps, tithe maps and enclosure maps but will not include the published Ordnance Survey series.

Bapton in Fisherton Delamere, 1742

An example of an early 18th century estate map. Maps such as these would usually be accompanied by a book of reference, containing details of land ownership or occupation, which may also survive and be held in the archives.
