Following the success of our previous series of afternoon lectures, a new series of lectures will begin in May. All are welcome to attend any of our talks which will take place at 2.15 pm on the days given below. Talks will take place in the ground floor Education Room of the History Centre. Tickets may be purchased in advance from the help desk, or can be reserved on 01249 705500. You may also buy tickets on the day of the talk.

Thursday 19 June 2008 - Use of Newspapers in Family and Local History by Robert Jago
Wiltshire's first newspaper was published in 1736. Explore 18th and 19th century newspapers and learn what gems you may uncover. Limted to 35 people.
Thursday 10th July - Researching your Town or Community by Claire Skinner and Michael Marshman
Discover what printed and archival sources are available for you to use in order to discover the history and development of your community. Limited to 35 people.
Thursday 14th August - Maps Through the Ages by Andrew Crookston
Find out about the maps that are available to help you in local history, house history or family history. Limited to 20 people.
Thursday 18th September - Non-Conformist Sources by Margaret Moles
Non-conformist records are less well known and used than those of the Church of England. Let our expert guide you through those available for Wiltshire. Limited to 35 people.
Thursday 16th October - Stories Behind Pub Names by Michael Marshman
Discover why the Cat and Fiddle or the Elephant and Castle have these names. A brief history of inn signs from medieval times to the present day using many local examples. Limited to 40 people.
Councillor Jane Scott of Wiltshire County Council and Councillor Rod Bluh of Swindon Borough Council opened the doors of the new Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre on Wednesday 31 October at 9.30 am, and welcomed the Centre's first visitors.

The Centre was well publicized by the local media, but visitors came from far and wide - including a couple from Barnsley in Yorkshire who were researching family history. We look forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world in the coming weeks and months.
