All Wiltshire libraries have collections of material about the county, and much of this can be borrowed. There is a large reference collection, which is especially strong on southern Wiltshire, at Salisbury Library.
The main collection is the Wiltshire Studies Library. This collection includes 25,000 books, 40,000 photographs, local newspapers from 1738, and Victorian censuses for Wiltshire.
In September 2007 the Wiltshire Studies collection moved from Trowbridge reference library to the new Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre, which opens to the public on 31 October 2007. This allows for more integrated working between various parts of Heritage services, especially the archive service and the local studies library staff, providing a better public service.
The history of Wiltshire towns and villages is available online at Wiltshire Parish Histories (formerly Community History) , and we also publish some books and maps. Information on all recent Wiltshire publications, and some local history news, is available in the Wiltshire Monthly Intelligencer.
