Our web site continues to grow with the parishes of Redlynch, Whiteparish and Landford (the ‘forgotten’ south eastern corner of Wiltshire having been completed in February. Substantial articles have been included on the schools in this area, particularly for Landford as there is only limited published history for this parish. John Chandler has very kindly allowed us to use the text from the second volume of his ‘Wiltshire: A History of its Landscape and People’ series. Now his articles on 42 parishes from ‘Devizes and Central Wiltshire’ (2003) are on the site with the parish articles from ‘Marlborough and Eastern Wiltshire’ that he had previously allowed us to use.
Parishes currently being worked on are Lyneham and Calne Without’ the latter including Derry Hill, Sandy Lane, Stockley, Studley, Blackland and Calstone Wellington, while the former includes Bradenstoke. While visiting these places I went into the thatched wooden church at Sandy Lane for the first time. It is a very interesting construction with all the original fittings, apart from the brass oil lamps, made of wood. A brief history and pictures, including one of the wooden font, are on the web site - www.wiltshire.gov.uk/community.
I am also trying to add at least 100 images each month so that by the end of the year there will be well over 3,000 available. Usage increased quite dramatically in January and February with 46,000 hits recorded on our thumbnail pages in the latter month.
I am writing this Intelligencer having just returned form Corsham, were I opened an exhibition entitled ‘In Living Memory’ in St Bartholomew’s Church. The exhibits were a range of artefacts and photographs spanning about 90 years and were displayed around the aisles and west end of the nave. An exhibit of early 20th century farm and smallholding equipment form Lackham College was in the north chapel.
I was delighted that the church was being used for this sort of community activity as this completes the full circle back to medieval and Saxon times, when the church was used for a wide range of secular activities, as it was normally the only public building in a small town or village. The Rector, Roger Clifton is very enthusiastic about bringing these events into the church and I and sure that this excellent 4 day exhibition will attract a good number of visitors.
The above provides a good link to the 2004 Spring Day School of the Wiltshire Local History Forum. This takes place on Saturday 17th April at the New Baptist Church, Sheep Street Devizes (opposite Devizes Library. The day has been planned by Judith Patrick, a well known architectural historian who will introduce the main styles of church architecture from medieval to Victorian times. Archivist Steve Hobbs will discuss documentary sources relating to each of the 4 major developments in ecclesiastical architecture.
The school will run from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. Admission is £5.00, which includes coffee and tea; you will need to make your own arrangements for lunch. The school will be followed by the annual general meeting of the Local Studies Forum at 3.15pm.
