Library special needs

About this service

Libraries provide a range of services to meet the requirements of those with special needs. These include talking books, large print, the Home Library Service, accessible computers, books in a range of community languages etc.

  • All static and mobile libraries are fully accessible or in the process of becoming so.
  • All library counter areas are fitted with induction loop systems.
  • A specially adapted mobile library visits sheltered housing and residential homes.
  • All new leaflets and guides are in a clear and large font and can be provided in large print on request.
  • We offer a 'Home Library Service' to housebound users.
  • Our book collections contain a large number of titles providing information about a very wide range of disabilities and medical conditions.
  • We have collections of books in large print and audio books at all libraries.
  • Larger libraries have magnifiers.
  • Many libraries have collections of material for those with basic educational needs.
  • Free computer and Internet access is available at all Libraries.
  • Our 10 largest libraries have a computer with Dolphin Supernova screen reading software and an extra large screen
