Disability sport

Wiltshire Council promotes equality of opportunity in sport and physical activity for people with disabilities by:

  • Organising competitive events for children and adults with disabilities.
  • Running participation projects which encourage and enable more people with disabilities to lead an active lifestyle.
  • Supporting the work of disability sports & physical activity clubs.
  • Encouraging and supporting mainstream sports and leisure organisations to include people with disabilities in their programmes.
  • Developing and delivering training & coach education courses.
  • Providing information and advice on disability sport.

Disability sports clubs being provided by Wiltshire Council presently include:

Salisbury

Fit Club - (10-12 week programme, Tuesdays, termly, 6.30-8pm, St Edmund's School)

The Fit Club is designed for 16+ yrs to provide generic sport and recreational opportunities for people with learning and/or physical disabilities.

Through sport, participants would develop their co-ordination and movement skills, whilst also improving their flexibility, fitness, mobility and social interaction. Generic activities have included aerobic exercises to music, simple fitness circuits, parachute games, team games and sports skill development through football, kwik cricket, short tennis, basketball and athletics.

Ability Sports Club - (10-12 week programme, Mondays, termly, 6.30-8pm, Five Rivers Leisure Centre)

The Ability sports club is aimed at adults (16+) with learning/physical disabilities who have already developed good all round fitness and co-ordination and attained basic sports skills, who are ready to make the next step onto sports specific coaching.
