PE and school sport

Wiltshire’s Primary and Secondary Schools are covered by five School Sports Partnerships. SSP’s are groups of schools working together to improve the provision of PE and sport within that Partnership. A typical partnership usually consists of a Partnership Development Manager (PDM), up to 8 School Sports Coordinators (SSCo) and 45 Primary Link teachers (PLT’s).
SSP’s are currently responsible for delivering the 5 hour offer – provision of 5 hours sport and physical activity to all young people aged between 5 and 19 years old. This consists of 2 hours high quality curriculum PE and then opportunities to access after school clubs, community sport, healthy living activities and lifestyles.

Sports Development supports the SSP’s through the provision of coaching, development of club school links, organisation of festivals and supply of training courses for teachers to achieve sports qualifications. These activities provide the link between curriculum activity and extra curriculur activity.

Our aim is to work in partnership with the SSP’s, PDM’s and SSCo’s and local sports clubs to develop and implement a quality sports programme for all children. This will attempt to ensure that their first experience of sport is positive.
Sport Unlimited

Sport Unlimited offers young people 8 to 10-week taster sessions in sports which they have requested and aims to get 300,000 participants to join clubs and continue with sport when the 10 weeks are up.

The Sports Development team play an influential role in the development of these programmes within Wiltshire, working in partnership with the County Sports Partnership, School Sports Partnerships, National Governing Bodies of Sport and many other agencies.
