Designated in 1966 and expanded in 1990, the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is the largest of the 38 AONBs in England and Wales, and the second largest protected landscape in England after the Lake District National Park. The area covers 2,038 square kilometres, spread across 15 local authorities and 293 parishes. The AONB is looked after by the Cotswolds Conservation Board, an independent statutory organisation of which Wiltshire Council is a member. Approximately 6% of the AONB falls within Wiltshire Council’s administrative area. Wiltshire Council also contributes to advisory, working groups and other work associated with the AONB.
Further information is provided at the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty website.
