How to get to Avebury

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

There are more environmentally friendly ways to get to Avebury than by car and they're usually a lot more fun.

Be environmentally friendly and leave the car, ride the bike, catch the bus or walk

On Foot

Avebury is at the end of the famous 87 mile long Ridgeway National Trail, from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire, passing through five counties. There are other less strenuous walks to and around Avebury along waymarked trails from almost every direction. A booklet of self-guided walks is available for purchase from the National Trust shop in Avebury.

By Bike

A network of cycle routes serve Avebury from towns and villages all around. It is possible to travel with a bicycle by train to Swindon, Chippenham and Trowbridge. Bike racks are available in Avebury near the Barn Gallery. Please note cycling is not recommended along the A4, A361 and A4361, as these are fast and busy roads.

On Horseback

Bridleways criss-cross the World Heritage Site and network out to all the villages and towns around Avebury. The fine landscape and established bridleways make Avebury a rewarding destination for riders.

By Public Transport

By combining buses and trains, which have links from stations at Swindon and Trowbridge, the public transport network makes it possible to leave the car at home wherever you are coming from.

Discount for bus users

To thank visitors for using public transport and reducing the demand for parking, all those who produce a bus ticket will receive a discount on individual entrance fees to The Alexander Keiller Museum and Barn Gallery. National Trust members will receive a £1 voucher which can be used on purchases such as guide books.

Public Transport Information

Avebury can be reached by taking the train to Swindon or Trowbridge and then the bus to the World Heritage Site
