A number of walks based around Trowbridge town are detailed below. These walks are designed to be a way to improve your health and fitness and provide an interesting and enjoyable walk.

The walks have been chosen so they can be adapted to easily fit into everyday life and become part of your normal routine.

Walking is suitable for just about everybody and can be enjoyed by both young and old and even those recovering from illness.

However:

Do build up gently if you are unfit. It doesn't have to hurt to achieve health benefits.

Do make sure you can be seen if you are walking when the light is poor.

Do walk on the right-hand side of the road (facing on coming traffic) when there are no footpaths and take care crossing roads.

Walk1

Starting at the entrance to Widbrook Surgery on Wingfield Road, walk west past St John's School and turn right into Brook Road. Brook Road slopes down over the Lambrok Stream Bridge, after which turn right next to a close-boarded fence on to the stream-side footpath. Follow the path until you reach the electricity sub-station, and turn left up a sharp incline reaching Brook Road with the Dillons store and Post Office to your left (there's a short cut to the Wingfield Road, about halfway along the stream-side footpath, via the cycle / footbridge and Nightingale Road.

Turn right into Brook Road and right again into BradfoRoad Road, continuing up the hill past the builder's merchants until you reach the Wingfield Road. Turn right into Wingfield Road, passing the Roman Catholic Church, a post box and a bus stop reaching your starting point outside the Widbrook Surgery. (2.5kms / 1.6miles).

Walk 2

Southwick Country Park has free public access to over 152 acres of countryside. Look out for snipe, kingfisher, owls, kestrels and skylarks, as well as hares, water voles and foxes. There are numerous walks (marked by posts) mostly starting from the car park on the A361 between Trowbridge and Southwick. You can also reach the park from Lambrok Road, Southwick Allotments and footpaths 53 & 54. (3.6kms / 2.2miles).

Walk 3

From the Park, by the rear of the Civic Hall, follow the riverside walk towards the Shires car park and the Town Bridge - take care when you cross Castle Street. At the Town Bridge, turn right into Wicker Hill, continuing to the town centre, by turning left into Manvers Street and right into Church Street

At the traffic lights and pedestrian crossing turn left into Union Street - on your right are the Almshouses. Follow the road as it bears right to a mini-roundabout, and turn right into The Halve. To cross the next roundabout, bear right crossing Roundstone Street, and turn left down through the underpass. As you emerge from the underpass, turn right towards the terrace end, into Harford Street. At the end of this street turn right into Ashton Street.

At the brick wall turn left and follow the walkway which will lead you to the roundabout at the junction of County Way and West Ashton Road. Turn down the West Ashton Road keeping to the left-hand side until you pass the petrol station. Beyond the mini-roundabout, cross the road and turn right onto the riverside path at the end of the housing estate. Follow this route through the Biss Meadows, via Tesco´s and any one of the bridges to return to the Park. (3.9kms / 2.4miles).

Walk 4

Follow Brook Road from the junction with Wingfield Road, past Walwayne Court School, to the junction with Broadmead. Follow Broadmead to the junction with Chilmark Road. Turn left into Chilmark Road, passing the Wiltshire Yeoman public house. Turn left into Westwood Road and continue to the end of the speed limit and footpath signs. Cross the steep stile and aim for the end of the row of trees.

Turning right at the trees a stile will appear ahead (near a gateway). Cross this double stile and aim at a point just to the left of a tall tree (in a hollow) to reach a further stile. Cross this stile into the last field. Aim for a point ahead to a hedge at the right of the last bungalow keeping a clump of trees and pond to your left.

Soon, in the hedge, a small bridge is revealed (known as London Bridge). Cross here, and following the path to the right emerge onto the A366 Wingfield Road. Turn left almost immediately, left again into Brook Road. (3.2kms / 2miles).
