Books and reading

We hold almost 700,000 items.  These include novels, information and reference books, books for children and young people, large print and talking books, eBooks, and music and drama performance sets

You can request any book in Wiltshire stock to be sent to your local library for a small charge (free for children’s items). We can get books from libraries all over the country, and the world – just ask at your library.

We purchase books throughout the year, and we also regularly move books between libraries so you should see something different when you visit. We also welcome donations of recently published books that are in a good physical condition.

There are key activites the library service undertakes to promote enjoyment of books and reading, part of a national ‘universal reading offer’ for libraries across the country:

  • Download the free Reading Passport app to start your virtual journey across the South West
  • Collect stamps for every book you read and event you attend. These stamps will then unlock different locations along your journey across the South West
  • Community pages allow you to add book reviews and submit your own creative writing
  • Start your journey by searching for Reading Passport in the App Store or Google Play store
