eBooks frequently asked questions

eBook FAQs

  • To borrow an eBook you will need a valid Wiltshire library card number
  • If you are not a member of Wiltshire Libraries, please visit your local library with proof of your name and address to join.  If you have no fixed abode, we will need to see proof of your name

  • You can borrow five eBooks at a time

  • You can borrow an eBook for up to 21 days
  • eBooks can be returned early but will automatically be made inaccessible once they expire.  This means that you do not have to remember to return your eBooks at the end of your loan period, if you do not wish to return them early

  • If an eBook you would like to borrow is already on loan to another member, you can place a hold for free

  • Due to Amazon’s proprietary file format they do not allow libraries loaned material which uses the industry standard EPUB and PDF formats with DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection
  • It is possible to download library eBooks onto Amazon Kindle Fire tablets by downloading the RBdigital app from the app store

  • You can read library eBooks on your Kobo Aura One by borrowing eBooks from the Wiltshire RBdigital library catalogue on your computer, downloading them to Adobe Digital Editions, connecting your Kobo to the computer and transferring the eBooks to it
  • This is different to how it worked with our previous supplier, as they had a special arrangement with Kobo which allowed their eBooks to be downloaded directly from the Kobo catalogue

  • Adobe Digital Editions is required to download eBooks to your computer
  • This is free software and a link is provided from the RBdigital support page to download it
  • Once the software is downloaded you will be asked to set up an Adobe ID, this is also free

There are a number of reasons why your library card may not allow you to log into the eBook site.  

Examples are:

  • Significant outstanding charges owing on your library card
  • Your library card has expired
  • Your library card has been reported lost or stolen
  • Your library books are 36 days or more overdue
  • You have been barred from using the library

If you are unable to login, contact your local library and they can check your library card or email libraryenquiries@wiltshire.gov.uk.

  • The eBook website and app have help sections but, if you do not find the answers there, you can 'Submit a ticket' describing the problem using the form on the website or emailing the address provided on the app help pages. RBdigital will then contact you to resolve the problem

  • eBooks can only be downloaded from a home computer
  • When eBooks are downloaded they will be stored in Adobe Digital Editions
  • The library computers are cleared down between each customer and could not store personal Adobe Digital Editions accounts

  • There are a huge range of fiction and non fiction titles to borrow for adults, teenagers and children
  • Some publishers will not allow RBdigital to make their eBooks available for libraries to lend so you may notice some authors you are looking for are missing
  • This may change as publishers review their policies on library eBook lending

  • You will not be able to view or renew your eBook loans from the library catalogue for our physical stock or from the self service terminals in libraries
