Books and reading

Customer notice

We are currently updating our website with a cleaner, mobile-friendly design. This page will be updated with the new design soon. Thank you for your patience.

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

What we do

We hold almost 700,000 items.  These include novels, information and reference books, books for children and young people, large print and talking books, eBooks, and music and drama performance sets

You can request any book in Wiltshire stock to be sent to your local library for 85p (free for children’s items). We can get books from libraries all over the country, and the world – just ask at your library.

We purchase books throughout the year, and we also regularly move books between libraries so you should see something different when you visit. We also welcome donations of recently published books that are in a good physical condition.

National reading offer

There are key activites the library service undertakes to promote enjoyment of books and reading, part of a national ‘universal reading offer’ for libraries across the country:

Other activities

We work with the regional literature development agency, Literature Works, and in partnership with other library authorities through Read South West, as well as publishers and local groups, to run other activities in libraries.  These include:

  • Reading Passport – encouraging adults to read a wider range of books for pleasure
  • Author visits – These can be found advertised on the events database and on our library homepage
  • Carers offer – including useful books
