Roads and highways - maintenance

Summary of Service

Technical surveys are carried out regularly to help us identify areas of the network which may require attention and remedial treatment. These areas are investigated from an engineering perspective, and they may be added to the structural maintenance programme.

Structural maintenance schemes involve a greater element of refurbishment or renewal of the highway assets. Major road, footway, drainage and bridge works are included.

Details of Service

Consultancy services for highway projects are provided by Mouchel Parkman, while the contract for work on the ground to implement road schemes and maintenance is held by Ringway Infrastructure Services. The structural maintenance programme is managed within this framework, working closely with the County Council.

Input from technical surveys, engineers, inspectors, Clarence reports from the public and staff in our Divisional offices helps to identify schemes that form our long-term structural maintenance programme. The maintenance programme is designed to arrest deterioration and improve the useful life of the roads and footpaths.

These schemes are rated using a consistent and objective system taking into account condition, location, and use and accident statistics. When funding for the coming year is announced the most appropriate schemes are scheduled to be carried out. Those that do not make it onto the list of works for that year are monitored and their priority updated accordingly as new data is received.

This system ensures that the money we spend is directed to the sites in most need. For further information, please see Community Area Highway Information.
