Summary of Service

Getting married the county of Wiltshire with its ancient stone circles, expansive views of the countryside and white chalk horses carved into unspoilt hillsides all help to create a unique and romantic setting for your wedding. Marriages are non-religious and are conducted by the local Registration Officer. They can take place in a Registration Office or an Approved Venue licensed by Wiltshire County Council.

Details of Service

In Wiltshire we have four Registration Offices and many other stunning venues, so no matter what kind of wedding you are looking for; we can provide you with a location that is perfect for your needs. Our trained and dedicated team is here to offer advice and do our utmost to make sure that your wedding day is special in every way.

In Wiltshire we offer a provisional booking service so that you can reserve the date and time of your marriage up to 18 months in advance. This will allow you time to make all the necessary arrangements for your wedding, including your reception. When you make your booking you will be given a date by which each of you must have completed the legal preliminaries for marriage, which will confirm the booking. However, before you can marry, each of you must give notice of your intention to marry, in person, in the registration district in which you live.

Each notice is valid for 12 months from the date it is given. The date and time of the ceremony may be varied within that year. However, a change to the place of marriage will mean that two fresh notices must be given.

All Wiltshire Registration Offices operate an appointment system for taking notices of marriage. Please telephone the relevant office to book an appointment and receive confirmation of the documents you will need to bring with you and the fees payable.

Needs

Produce proof of your identity and address. Passports and birth certificates are ideal for proving identity but if you do not have a current valid passport we will advise you as to what other forms of identity may be acceptable.

If you have been married before and divorced you will need to show a decree absolute of divorce bearing the Court's original stamp. If your husband or wife died we will need to see a certified copy of their death certificate.

If you have changed your name by Deed Poll, change of name Deed or by Statutory Declaration the documents will need to be shown.

If either of you is under eighteen we will need proof that your parents or guardian consent to the marriage. If your parents are divorced we will also need to see the Court Order that gives custody to one or other parent.

If you are not able to provide any of the above documents the Registration Officer will explain what other documents may be acceptable.

Payment

For full details of costs or payments, please see Fees.

Eligibility

You must both have had your usual place of residence in England or Wales for the seven days immediately before giving notice. The notices must be given to the Superintendent Registrar of the district in which you have resided for 7 days, regardless of where the marriage is to take place. It does not matter if you move to a different address after the notice is given.

Each of you must give notice in person. The notice is a legal statement signed by you. The person you are marrying, a relative or friend cannot give the notice on your behalf.
