Amesbury resident prosecuted for fly-tipping

Fly-tipping will not be tolerated in Wiltshire. It's a disgusting blight on our local environment, a source of pollution, a potential danger to public health and it is a drain on council resources at a time when resources are limited

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste

Mr Octavian Pana, 22 of Beyer Road, Amesbury appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court on Monday 12 August 2019 and pleaded guilty of dumping five bags of household waste in Stockport Road, Amesbury.

Mr Pana was ordered to pay a total of £796 in fines and costs. Crucial evidence led the council's environmental enforcement officers to Mr Pana, who admitted to the offences during a council interview under caution.

The now disused Stockport Road has a history of fly-tipping, but council officers now work proactively in that area, to catch fly-tippers in the act.

Bridget Wayman, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste said: "This fly-tipping prosecution highlights that we take all reports seriously and will fully investigate them however small. Fly-tipping will not be tolerated in Wiltshire. It's a disgusting blight on our local environment, a source of pollution, a potential danger to public health and it is a drain on council resources at a time when resources are limited. The household recycling centre was less than 5 minutes away from where the waste was dumped and was open at the time of the offence".

Wiltshire Council recently introduced a new £200 fixed penalty notice for householders who give their waste to unlicensed waste collectors, who fly tip to avoid disposal costs. Two of these new FPN's have been issued in the last three weeks and the council is advising residents to conduct detailed checks with any waste collector, before allowing them to remove their waste.

Residents can report fly-tipping and unauthorised waste carriers using Wiltshire Council's online reporting tool ‘My Wiltshire'
