Devizes roadworks takes positive step and nearing completion

From now on the traffic will flow a little quicker as the use of three way signals during peak times has now stopped and we are now only a couple of weeks or so away from the project being completed and the new system being operational

Philip Whitehead, chair of the Devizes Community Area Transport Group

The roadworks to improve the junction of London Road and Windsor Drive in Devizes have reached a positive development.

From today (Tuesday 2 October), daytime works will take place predominantly using a temporary roundabout with use of temporary three way signals only outside of peak hours.

Surfacing work will begin from 7pm using two-way temporary signals on London Road and a closure of Windsor Drive.

Installation of the new signal equipment is due to start from Monday 8 October. Work will be carried out, including white lining, during the daytime again predominantly using the temporary roundabout for traffic control along with limited use of temporary three way signals. Following a period of on-site testing the permanent signals will then be in use.

Philip Whitehead, chair of the Devizes Community Area Transport Group, said: "This has been a frustrating time for motorists and businesses in the area, particularly with the unavoidable delays that have been an every-day experience for a very long time.

"From now on the traffic will flow a little quicker as the use of three way signals during peak times has now stopped and we are now only a couple of weeks or so away from the project being completed and the new system being operational.

"I again thank everyone for their patience during this time, which we know has been severely tested at times."

The project sees the installation of traffic lights at the roundabout on the junction of London Road and Windsor Drive, which gets very busy at peak times.

The project was identified as part of the wider Transport Strategy for Devizes which was developed through a process of consultation and analysis to support growth in the Wiltshire Core Strategy.  This will not only decrease the level of congestion leaving Devizes on a morning but also reduce the pollution experienced in the centre of Devizes.
