Exchange of ideas for higher education

Experts from the worlds of education and employment met in Devizes to talk about the kinds of qualifications and skills which are needed most in Wiltshire.

The workshop at The Corn Exchange centred on the latest research into higher education provision in Wiltshire based on a county-wide survey.

The venture was led by the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council.

Wiltshire Council's portfolio holder for education and skills, Philip Whalley, said: "As we don't have a university in Wiltshire we are looking at providing higher qualifications for people in a number of different ways to make up for a skills shortage.

"Lots of organisations are working together to come up with a strategy on how we can achieve this."

SWLEP director Paddy Bradley said: "Enabling businesses to have an appropriately skilled and competitive workforce to support growth, innovation and creativity remains an investment priority.

"We are developing a higher education strategy so that we can shape a more comprehensive higher education offer in the area and enable more residents to gain the university-level skills that employers need.

"Our stakeholder events are an opportunity for employers to be involved in shaping the strategy to ensure that it is business-focussed and delivers an appropriately skilled and competitive workforce to achieve our growth ambitions for the economy of Swindon and Wiltshire."

Representatives from universities, colleges, training providers, schools and local authorities attended the workshop.

The aim of the event was to create a draft strategy for higher education in the county which will then go out for consultation.

A similar event takes place on 24 April at the Swindon STEAM Museum.
