Healthy Me programme launched to help families make healthier choices for life
Healthy Me is a 10 week programme for children aged seven to 11 years who may be less active than recommended and above their healthy weight range.
Young people and their families can attend the ten 90-minute sessions based in health and wellbeing centres and leisure centres across the county to find out about nutrition, food groups, portion sizes, food labelling, physical activity and making healthier choices a habit.
Theory and practical elements, including a supermarket sweep style hunt for healthy food labels, are mixed together to make the sessions fun and informative.
Jerry Wickham, cabinet member for public health said: "Sometimes families may want to make changes but find it difficult to take that first step. The Healthy Me sessions will provide young people and their families with the knowledge and tools to make positive changes in their lives that can last a lifetime."
The programme builds on the success of the previous SHINE programme which helped 107 families. Once the programme is completed families will be supported to continue their healthy lifestyles.
