Wiltshire-based sports project aims to kick racism out of football
Wiltshire Council has teamed up with Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust to bring Kick It Out events to young people aged 11 to 19 during the October half-term.
Events will take place at Trowbridge Park on Friday 20 October, and Wellington Academy, in Tidworth, on Monday 23 October, from 11am-4pm, and will feature both a Street Skillz championship and a football tournament.
The Street Skillz championship will include tests of skills such as the crossbar challenge, rebounder challenge and keep-up challenge. All young people are welcome to come and get involved you could be crowned Wiltshire Council's Kick It Out Street Skillz champion 2017. The events will also incorporate the ability sports programme for young people aged 9-18 years with a disability.
Both events also include football tournaments for 14-16-year-olds, the winners of which will compete in a final at half-time of Swindon Town's fixture with Chesterfield in November. Individuals, groups of friends, youth groups and other community organisations are encouraged to get involved.
Cllr John Thomson, Wiltshire Council deputy leader and cabinet member for leisure, said: "This is a great opportunity for young people from Wiltshire to show their support for a national campaign while taking part in the nation's favourite sport.
"I know participants will enjoy the skills challenges and the competition element is sure to be hard-fought, with the prize of playing at a professional football ground in front of thousands of fans.
"Underlying this fun opportunity is a strong message that racism and prejudice will not be tolerated in any walk of life."
Kick It Out is football's equity and inclusion campaign and uses football as a tool to promote inclusion, challenge discrimination and to work for positive change. It is funded by the Premier League and several professional players have lent their support to the campaign. Annual weeks of action have been held locally across the country to spread the principles of Kick it Out at grass-roots level.
