Wiltshire leisure centres get on their bike for Alzheimer's Support

Leisure centres throughout Wiltshire will be taking part in a 12-hour ‘spinathon' challenge to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease on World Alzheimer's Day (Thursday 21 September).

Wiltshire Council has teamed up with Alzheimer's Support to take part in the event, which will see staff and customers at 10 leisure centres taking in the Race to Remember, a 12-hour charity indoor cycling event to raise funds for Alzheimer's Support.

The event starts at 7am, when the battle begins to see which leisure centre can cycle the furthest distance on static exercise bikes.

John Thomson, cabinet member for leisure, said: "This is a fantastic event for a worthy cause, and it's great to see staff and customers from the local community both putting in the miles to raise these funds.

"I urge everyone who can to go to their local leisure centre on Thursday 21 September to take part in this fun event."

Babs Harris, CEO of Alzheimer's Support, said: "We are so excited about this and grateful to everybody who takes part on the day. We have to raise £300,000 every year to maintain our award-winning services for people living with dementia and their carers here in Wiltshire.

"The first ‘spinathon' in May was a great success in Devizes and Tidworth, so it will be brilliant to open it out to more centres. We can't wait to see which team travels the furthest."

Each centre will be looking to fill 20-minute slots throughout the day with customers, members and staff who would like to take to the saddle to join in the challenge, while volunteers from Alzheimer's Support will also be on hand with collection buckets, and to offer information and advice about Alzheimer's disease.

To get involved, please speak to the staff in your local participating leisure centre.

The leisure centres taking part in the event are:

  • Amesbury Leisure Centre
  • Calne Leisure Centre
  • Devizes Leisure Centre
  • Durrington Swimming & Fitness
  • Fiver Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, Salisbury
  • Marlborough Leisure Centre
  • Nadder Centre, Tisbury
  • Pewsey Leisure Centre
  • Springfield Community Campus, Corsham
  • Tidworth Leisure Centre

You can follow the teams on the day on social media with the hashtag #Race2Remember.
