Revised opening times for Household Recycling Centres

I would encourage residents to note the revised opening days and hours for their local HRC.

Toby Sturgis, cabinet member with responsibility for strategic planning, property, waste and strategic housing

Members of the public are being encouraged to check the new opening times of Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) before visiting one of the sites.

Changes to the opening hours for HRCs in Wiltshire came into force last month. HRCs' opening hours are now 10am to 4pm on each day they are open. All sites are open on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, which are the days when usage is at its highest, along with two additional days each week.

These additional days are on the same days each week for individual sites but will vary from site to site, in order to ensure that residents have access to at least one household recycling centre within their area (north, south, east or west Wiltshire) seven days a week.

We are aware some people have had to queue in order to use their Household Recycling Centre during what is always a busy summer period and while residents are adjusting to the new opening hours. The main queues have built up before the new opening time of 10am. People are advised to visit the website at Wiltshire.gov.uk to ensure they are familiar with the new arrangements before setting off and we would like to thank site users for their patience during this period of adjustment.

The sites are particularly busy in the mornings and the day following the weekday closures.

Toby Sturgis, cabinet member with responsibility for strategic planning, property, waste and strategic housing, said: "I would encourage residents to note the revised opening days and hours for their local HRC. We have worked hard to find a solution which means that the centres will be open at the busiest times."

Residents should be aware that alternative methods of disposing of key waste types that tend to be taken to the HRCs for recycling are also available.

Cardboard is one of these key materials, so to request an additional plastic bottle and cardboard bin, order one online at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/new-replacement-bins

Garden waste is another, so sign up to the new chargeable garden waste service online www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/gardenwaste or order a subsidised food waste digester that will also successfully compost your garden waste http://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/home-composting

Paper/glass/cans/textiles to obtain a second black box www.wiltshire.gov.uk/new-replacement-bins

To get old furniture re-used / recycled, donate furniture items to a local reuse charity www.wiltshire.gov.uk/rubbish-and-recycling/large-item-collection
