Wiltshire cyclists get on their bike for SSAFA and Armed Forces Day

With the Armed Forces Day National Event in Salisbury just under two weeks away, more than 50 cyclists took to the saddle today (Sunday 16 June) for an endurance ride to raise money for Armed Forces Day National Event main charity partner SSAFA.

The 75-mile route to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day took in the wonderful sights of Wiltshire, including places with a military significance, such as the Fovant Badges, Larkhill and Warminster.

Riders started at 8.30am from Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre, Salisbury, and finished at the same venue in the afternoon.

The cyclists were made up of Wiltshire Council officers, including Executive Director Dr Carlton Brand; plus Lieutenant General Sir Andrew Gregory of SSAFA; Kier Pritchard and officers from Wiltshire Police; members of the Armed Forces; members of Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service; representatives from Armed Forces Day National Event Platinum sponsors Lovell and KBR Aspire Defence; and representatives from Armed Forces Day National Event Gold sponsors.

Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said: "Congratulations to all the riders, who all gave up their Sunday to raise funds for Armed Forces Day National Event main charity partner SSAFA.

"It was fantastic to see so many riders finish this endurance event, and we're fortunate that they had the beautiful backdrop of the Wiltshire countryside to enjoy as they took on the challenge.

"I'd particularly like to thank our Armed Forces Day National Event Platinum sponsors Lovell and KBR Aspire Defence, and our Gold sponsors BA Systems, General Dynamics, MiPermit for their support both at this event and the forthcoming Armed Forces Day National Event celebration at Hudson's Field in Salisbury on 28-30 June.

"There are still free tickets available for all three days of the Armed Forces Day National Event. It promises to be a fantastic weekend, with military displays, an air show and a Royal visit, plus headline acts The Feeling and Björn Again already confirmed and the Saturday night headliner yet to be announced, so I'd urge everyone to get their tickets now!"
