Cold weather information and services affected

Most roads in Wiltshire are now open, but there is a lot of ice, slush and standing water on the roads, so please allow extra time, take care and drive to the conditions. Check below for closures and disruptions.

Please check weather updates with the Met Office. We are also asking everyone to look out for any vulnerable friends, family and neighbours who may be at risk.

  • Everleigh, at Pewsey Road is mostly two lanes, the odd location is single track
  • A3028 Bulford - one lane only

If you are heading out in Wiltshire on foot, please take care, wear appropriate footwear and be aware of slips and trips in the icy conditions.

Not all bus services are able to operate in Wiltshire today and those buses that are running are having to stay on the main roads. If you need to travel by bus today or on Sunday, please check the bus company's website or social media, or call 01225 718080 for the latest information.

We anticipate that all bus services should be able to operate normally on Monday.

Salisbury park and ride sites are closed today (3 March) due to the icy conditions.

Some services are being affected by the weather conditions, including:

Due to significant disruption to Wiltshire’s road network today, the council has stood down its waste and recycling collection vehicles as it remains unsafe to travel. As you are no doubt aware, the advice from the emergency services is not to travel.

Waste and recycling collections – Monday 5 March

Black Box Collections

We will keep road conditions under review over the weekend. It is anticipated that black box collections scheduled for Monday 5 March will be completed as planned.

Residents whose black box collections were not completed on Thursday 1 March and Friday 2 March are asked to put their box back out on their next scheduled collection along with any additional recycling that they may have. Additional recycling should be separated  and placed in carrier bags alongside the box. Alternatively excess recycling may be taken to household recycling centres once these reopen. Check website for availability.

All other waste and recycling collections

We will keep road conditions under review over the weekend. On Monday 5 March our priority is to collect non-recycled waste. Please continue to place all your containers out on your normal scheduled collection day. If we are unable to get to you on your scheduled collection day please leave your containers out until we are able to empty them.

Due to the high winds and snowfall forecast over the next couple of days, we have taken the decision to cancel all outdoor markets due to be held today Friday 2 March 2018 and tomorrow Saturday 3 March 2018.

On Friday 2 March 2018, the markets cancelled will be:

  • Calne (Phelps Parade)
  • Chippenham (High Street)
  • Warminster (Central Car Park)

On Saturday 3 March 2018, the markets cancelled will be:

  • Chippenham (High Street)
  • Marlborough (High Street)

The Shambles indoor market in Devizes will remain open as normal.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause but the health and safety of all market traders and members of the public is the primary concern during these expected challenging weather conditions

Many leisure centres are open, but some lessons and classes have been cancelled. If you are attending a leisure centre, please take care as the roads and paths around the centres may be slippery. For updates on your local centre, see our leisure pages. Close

All our children's centres are closed today

All of our household recycling centres remained closed on Saturday 3 March. We cleared snow from some sites on Saturday where it was safe to do so.

Everleigh household recycling centre has been assessed as unsafe to open on Sunday 4 March, but all other sites will be open during normal opening hours on Sunday 4 March - see the opening hours

We will endeavour to open Everleigh household recycling centre as soon as possible. Please check this website page and social media for updates before travelling.

Services from Monday 5 March

Please be aware that while we work hard to return services to normal from Monday, some non-essential services may be affected. Please check our website for updates.

We also have updates on the following:

We would advice you not to make unnecessary journeys. If you need to travel, please use the main roads where possible, and drive to the conditions. We have more information on driving in severe weather

We have a statutory duty to provide Severe Weather Emergency Provisions (SWEP) to anyone who is sleeping rough when the weather is predicted to fall to 0 degrees or below for three consecutive nights.

We've triggered those provisions with temperatures forecast to remain at zero or below until Monday 5 March, based on current predictions. As a result overnight accommodation is being offered for those affected and individuals can attend the council's housing options hubs as soon as possible for help and support.

We have advice hubs at Monkton Park in Chippenham, County Hall in Trowbridge and Bourne Hill in Salisbury. We work with partner agencies to support individuals, not just during the worst weather but also by looking at longer term housing solutions as part of this process.

During work hours, the advice service can be contacted on Chippenham 01249 706666, Trowbridge 01225 718005 or Salisbury 01722 434233 but after 5.30pm, contact the Emergency Team on 0300 456 0100.

Given the current very cold weather forecast for the weekend ahead, we strongly advise that all litter pick events scheduled to take place this weekend (Friday 2, Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March) are cancelled and rescheduled for the weekend of Friday 23 to Sunday 25 March.

The advice we have received from the emergency planning team at Wiltshire Council and Keep Britain Tidy is that litter pick events should not go ahead if there is any doubt about the safety of participants.

The latest information we have from the Met Office is that the recent cold weather will continue into the weekend, with daytime temperatures struggling to reach zero and a significant wind chill making it feel much colder. Snow is widely expected throughout the county on Thursday and into Friday, with widespread accumulations of 2cms and 5-10cms across higher areas. The low temperatures mean that any snowfall is likely to still be on the ground into Saturday and Sunday.

While this is disappointing, we think safety of those taking part must come first at all times. We hope you will rearrange your litter pick so we can continue to collectively clean up Wiltshire.

Please contact your community engagement manager find their contact details to inform them of your rescheduled litter pick event details and to arrange for your litter to be collected.

We won't be issuing any fixed penalty charge notices to anyone that has had to abandon their vehicle on our roads or car parks on Friday 2 March or Saturday 3 March 2018. Please do not attempt to move your vehicle until it's safe to do so.

The Public Information Event at the Guildhall in Salisbury has been cancelled due to severe weather conditions. Find out more.
