Thousands cheer on cyclists as OVO Energy Tour Series returns to Salisbury
"Salisbury is the perfect backdrop for this exciting event and once again spectators and competitors alike enjoyed a great evening of racing through our historic streets."Baroness Scott of Bybrook, OBE, Leader of Wiltshire Council
Thousands lined Salisbury streets yesterday (23 May 2019) to cheer on Britain's best teams and riders as the OVO Energy Tour Series returned to the city.
Some of the world's top cyclists raced around the 1.2km circuit spurred on by the cheering crowds in the evening sunshine. Commentators said the crowds were the biggest on this year's tour so far.
Having hosted the 100th round in series history and the event's 10-year anniversary in May 2018, Britain's leading televised cycle series was paying a second visit for this season's penultimate showdown.
In the women's OVO Energy Tour Series Rebecca Durrell edged her Brother UK Tifosi p/b OnForm team closer to their maiden overall title with her second race win of the week, just ahead of Team Breeze rider Rhona Callander.
In the men's race, Freddie Scheske became the first Germany rider to win a round of the OVO Energy Tour Series, taking a victory by 23 seconds over team mate Ed Clancy for Vitus Pro Cycling p/b Brother UK.
Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: "What an amazing event once again the atmosphere was electric as the riders raced around the route. Salisbury is the perfect backdrop for this exciting event and once again spectators and competitors alike enjoyed a great evening of racing through our historic streets."
The Wiltshire venue joins Redditch, Motherwell, Aberdeen, Durham, Birkenhead and Brooklands for the 2019 OVO Energy Tour Series.
As well as being an unticketed, free-to-attend event, the OVO Energy Tour Series is unique in the world of cycling, as the focus in both the men's and women's competition is on the teams, who battle for the overall title based on the performance of all five of their riders in each round.
Highlights of the OVO Energy Tour Series are screened on ITV4 and broadcast around the world, while event days provide the opportunity for a range of community and cycling activities to take place on closed-road circuits.
Salisbury's event will be shown at 6pm on Saturday 25 May with the programme also available on demand via the ITV Hub catch-up service.
