Wiltshire Council pounces at fly-tip black-spot

My message to selfish, anti-social people who dump their rubbish for others to clear up is simple: we will catch you and fine you

Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for waste

Wiltshire Council stepped up its fight against fly-tipping by catching and fining an illegal dumper.

A Swindon man was fined £400 after CCTV captured him emptying a van-load of rubbish at Sainsbury's car park in Royal Wootton Bassett.

The plumbing business he works for was also issued with a £300 fixed penalty notice for failing to produce a waste carrier's licence.

The supermarket car park has become a black-spot for fly-tipping. Wiltshire Council's enforcement team has issued three fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping at the location this year.

The site is owned by Wiltshire Council but leased to Sainsbury's which is responsible for clearing litter and waste in the car park.

Bridget Wayman, Wiltshire Council's cabinet member for waste, said: "There is no hiding place for fly-tippers in the county.

"My message to selfish, anti-social people who dump their rubbish for others to clear up is simple: we will catch you and fine you.

"We are committed to the crackdown on waste crime.

"It costs taxpayers and landowners millions every year in clean-up costs.

"It is a significant blight on our environment. Fixed penalty notices are a vital tool in combating this illegal activity".

Residents can report fly-tipping online or by calling 0300 456 0100.
