The Salisbury Park & Ride scheme celebrates its 10th anniversary this year and since its introduction in 2001, usage has increased so that we are now carrying almost half a million customers a year.

Although the number of parking sites has increased during this period, the way in which the Park & Ride scheme operates has largely stayed the same. Wiltshire Council has therefore been reviewing the scheme and examining how it can be run more cost effectively in these financially challenging times

Using the Park & Ride has become an important way of life for many of our customers and we are keen to see it continue. However, for this to be possible, we will have to make some changes from 6 June 2011.

The main changes at a glance

  • The Park & Ride bus service is now operated by Hatts
  • New, more environmentally friendly buses are being provided by the bus company to operate the Park & Ride services and help reduce air pollution in Salisbury.
  • The Park & Ride bus timetables have changed slightly and on weekdays the last buses now depart from the City Centre at 6.40pm on weekdays and 6.30pm on Saturdays. You may be able to return to the sites after this using a regular bus, car sharing, walking or cycling.
  • A bus lane is also to be constructed on the Downton Road later this year, which will speed up morning journeys from the Britford site into the City Centre.
  • Payment for the Park & Ride service will now need to be made to the bus driver when you board the bus at the car park, rather than using a ticket machine in the waiting room. You will no longer need to take a ticket at the barrier when you enter the car park.
  • The amount that you pay to use the Park & Ride scheme will depend on the number of people travelling with you - £2.50 for one person or £3.50 for 2, 3 or 4 people travelling in a group. Children under 7 with an adult can still travel free and discounted tickets will also be available for regular users.
  • Senior Citizens and others who hold an English National Concessionary Bus Pass can still use it to travel free of charge. Any accompanying passengers without one of these bus passes will have to pay the normal fare. Please note if you live outside Wiltshire, you cannot use your bus pass on a Park & Ride bus before 9.30am on weekdays.

Further information

Will any of the bus stops be changing?

The Park & Ride buses will pick passengers up at the same bus stops in the City Centre that they do now. However, on journeys into the city, buses from the Britford site will now terminate at either Milford Street or at New Canal and so passengers wishing to travel to Fisherton St. or the Law Courts will need to change buses.

What supervision will there be at each of the Park & Ride car parks?

All our sites are covered by CCTV. Employees of the bus company Hatts will often be on site, and members of our Parking Services team will also make regular visits to each site.
