Hardenhuish Lane, Chippenham - pedestrian and cycling improvements

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

Background

Wiltshire Council is currently in the process of implementing its second Local Transport Plan for 2006 -2011 (LTP2). The Local Transport Plan sets out a number of transport objectives and priorities based on the ‘Wiltshire Strategic Boards’ (WSB). A key objective of the plan to seek and develop integrated transport measures throughout the county which are designed to encourage alternative modes of transport to the motor vehicle such as walking and cycling.

In 2008 following representations made by local schools, parents and residents, Wiltshire Council (formally Wiltshire County Council) agreed to investigate possible measures to improve conditions for both pedestrians and cyclists on Hardenhuish Lane. Consultants ‘Mouchel were subsequently appointed to undertake the necessary data collection and feasibility work and put forward their proposals. The initial proposals were then further developed following discussions with local schools, The Police, Chippenham Town Council, local members and a number of Hardenhuish Lane residents.

What improvements are being made?

Following the introduction of the Phase 1 pedestrian improvements in early 2009, Wiltshire Council will be commencing work on Phase 2 in late October 2010.

The scheme follows collaboration between Wiltshire Council and Sustrans as part of the ‘links to school’ initiative to provide improved cycle infrastructure and builds upon the Phase 1 work already undertaken along Hardenhuish Lane with the provision of a new ‘shared use’ pedestrian and cycle facility. The route commences close to the junction of ‘Ridings Mead’ and continues on the eastern side of Hardenhuish lane and links to the existing segregated pedestrian /cycle path adjacent to Sheldon School. Further improvements will link the route, via the Pelican crossing on Bristol Road, to the existing cycle facilities on Hungerdown Lane. The scheme includes the widening of the existing footway at specific locations along the route and includes resurfacing to improve the overall finished level and ride quality of the surface.

Towards the northern end of Hardenhuish Lane, immediately south of the Barnes Road junction a new ‘zebra’ crossing is proposed. The crossing is being provided by funds provided by Chippenham Town Council & ‘Archstone Lifestyle Homes Limited’ . Further details on the crossing can be found via the links below.

A composite drawing of the current proposals and more detailed plans of the Phase 2 proposals are available via the links below

When will the work be undertaken?

The Phase 2 works are programmed to commence during the October ½ term school holiday (week commencing 25th October) and will take approximately 5 weeks to complete.

For reasons of Health and Safety it will at times be necessary to use temporary signals to control the movement of traffic; however every effort will be made to keep delays to a minimum.

Are any further improvements planned?

Wiltshire Council is aware of resident’s ongoing concerns regarding on-street parking issues in Old Hardenhuish Lane. Over recent months discussions have taken place between the interested parties including the resident’s association regarding the possible introduction of waiting restrictions. Formal advertisement of the proposals will take place within the coming months. Please look out for the relevant sites notices and advertisements in the local press.
