Smarter travel choices

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

Welcome to Smarter Choices, the new name for Travelwise. Smarter Choices is part of the Transport Policy Team within the Transport, Environment and Leisure Department.

Smarter Choices is about encouraging ways of travel that are sustainable – that is that minimise the impacts upon the environment and reduce carbon emissions

Car sharing

Smarter Choices is not 'anti-car', but we do encourage and promote less car use for trips - typically those short journeys under two miles.

When using a car is essential, car sharing can be the perfect solution and/or using more fuel efficient vehicles to make your journey. By essential, we mean that there is no other way of travelling - not just because using a car is more convenient and saves time! For more information on fuel efficient vehicles, check out the Energy Saving Trust

Walk, cycle, use public transport

Smarter Choices tries to encourage people to walk, cycle, use public transport, or even avoid the need to travel altogether. This might be by combining trips to make just 1 journey instead of 2, or, staying put and working or shopping from home.

Everyone needs at least 30 minutes of brisk exercise each and every day. Giving up your car for those little trips is the easy, sensible and cheap way of getting you fit whilst keeping the air cleaner and helping Wiltshire's economy work by reducing congestion.

Become travel aware

Individuals, schools, colleges, businesses and other organisations can become more travel aware through Travel Plans. Theses provide a coordinated action plan for reducing car use and giving more people the freedom and independence to find better ways to live, work, and travel.

As one of the largest employers in Wiltshire, the Council, we are implementing our own Corporate Travel Plan (pdf 613Kb) , consulting and involving staff in the process. Developed in 2004, we have focused on our main campus County Hall where almost 1000 people work.

To get involved the Calendar of Events shows you approximately what events are happening that you can become involved in - check the contacts provided for more information.
