Connect2 Cycle Route

In Salisbury, Connect2 is aiming to deliver two continuous, safe walking and cycling routes along the two A36 corridors out of Salisbury. The planned route will connect Wilton in the west with Alderbury in the east via Salisbury city centre. It is funded by The Big Lottery Fund, Sustrans and Wiltshire Council.

More information on Connect2 visit the Sustrans website.

Background

In June 2005 the Big Lottery Fund and ITV announced a competition to find the winner of a £50 million National Lottery grant. The search was on for a groundbreaking project that would inspire communities to revitalise the areas where they live. Connect2 was put together by Sustrans and a network of local authorities and community groups. It was one of the four shortlisted projects put forward to the public vote, which was carried out online and by telephone following a television programme about each project on ITV1. On Wednesday 12 December 2007 Connect2 was announced as the winner, taking 42% of the votes and winning the £50 million prize. The national scheme consists of 79 projects across the country.

In Salisbury, our Connect2 project has been led by Wiltshire Council, the Cycle Opportunity Group for Salisbury (COGS) and Sustrans. The local communities in Alderbury and Wilton were particularly active in raising votes for the project.

Update

We are currently carrying out preliminary surveys and investigating options for the route. On Saturday July 4th 2009, Wiltshire Council will be joining Connect2 schemes across the country in celebrating our progress.

Saturday 4 July

Morning Connect2Ride from Alderbury joins Wilton Community Carnival parade at 12.30pm. The parade leads to fun activities on Castle Meadow playing fields. The carnival theme is Independence day. For more information about ride visit the Cycle Opportunity Group for Salisbury website.
