Dont drink and drive poster 2010

Wiltshire Council road safety uses a comprehensive programme of education, training and publicity to help improve the safety of road users in the county.

To do this the team supports the government’s road safety publicity calendar and other national and local promotions.

The government's December campaign particularly targets young men between the ages of 17 and 29 and focuses on the 'moment of doubt' strategy. It highlights the personal consequences of a drink drive conviction and the Department for Transport's (DfT) Lock Up poster above supports the campaign.

Throughout the month of December Wiltshire Police will be participating in the national drink drive campaign. Inspector Nick Elton, Operations Manager for the Wiltshire Police Road Policing Unit said "Over the Christmas and new year period officers from the Road Policing Unit will be out enforcing the drink drive message and arresting those motorists who are over the limit."

Wiltshire Council works together with its road safety partners to reduce road casualties and help improve road safety in the county.

The DFT reports:

The legal alcohol limit for drivers in Great Britain is:

  • 80 milligrammes (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres (ml) of blood (80mg/100ml), or
  • 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100ml of breath, or
  • 107mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine.

Rather than risk judging this legal limit and getting it wrong, the best option is not to drink and drive at all. If you are drinking alcohol leave your car at home.

Drink alcohol and drive and you risk:

  • court conviction
  • criminal record
  • up to six months in prison
  • minimum 12 month driving ban
  • fine of up to £5000
  • increased car insurance

Take drugs and drive, the penalties are basically the same.
