Pavement problems

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

Wiltshire Council has the responsibility for the maintenance of almost all of the surfaced footways and pavements within the County. The Council regularly inspects its Footways for defects where levels vary by 15mm or more. These defects are repaired very quickly. Surfaces that may appear poor, through cracking or minor surface deterioration are left for subsequent resurfacing.

Pavements stolen slabs

Theft of paving stones is extremely rare. Missing slabs are potentially hazardous to all of us and so we will seek to reinstate the affected area very quickly. If it is not possible to match the missing slabs, another material may be used. The key priority is the safety of the path, for it's users.

Obstructed pavements

To ensure pavements are kept clear of obstructions.

Items placed on the highway such as advertising signs, materials, and trading booths can be a hazard for users of the highway, especially the partially sighted and the disabled.

We take appropriate measures to have unauthorised obstructions removed from the highway as necessary in order to keep the highways safe and available for use by the public.

We as Highway Authority have a responsibility to keep public highways open and remove obstructions and encroachments which may affect the use and safety of the highway.

Whenever an encroachment is suspected on the public highway, we carry out a status check to determine the exact limits of the highway, and to establish whether an encroachment has occurred.

Any encroachment such as fencing-off or building on the public highway prevents the legitimate use of the highway, and whenever an encroachment takes place on the public highway measures are taken to remove the encroachment, or if deemed appropriate and the land is considered surplus to highway requirements to extinguish highway rights.

Personal injury

Any hazard in the highway (road or pavement) caused as a result of an accident, damage or vandalism may be considered a risk to the public and could result in personal injury to pedestrians, road users or possible damage to property.

To report a pavement problem you can either:

Report a pavement problem online or use the contact details below.

If you see a potential trip hazard in any footway or pavement, which exceed 20mm, we would like to know about it. Please report it and the site will be promptly inspected by a technician and any necessary action taken. Cosmetic defects will not be repaired, as the key priority of the Council is safety.
