Our Customer Lighting And Roads Enquiry Centre (CLARENCE) is a service centre set up to allow you to quickly and easily report road and lighting defects and hazards.

If you have spotted a defect or fault on a Wiltshire road or right of way or cycle lane, such as a pothole, a broken street light or a blocked route then we at Wiltshire Council want to hear from you.

To report a defect you can either:

Please note: this method of reporting a defect should not be used to inform us of emergency issues, such as a fallen tree blocking a road. In such instances please contact Clarence on 0800 23 23 23 or 01225 777234 (office hours 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). If the report is out of hours please telephone our out of hours service on 01722 413834.

Making a claim against Wiltshire Council

If you wish to make a Compensation claim against the council, for damage to your vehicle for instance, you should report the defect via Clarence. You must also tell the operator that you would like to make a claim. They will take all your details, the location of the incident and when it happened. The details will then be passed to a member of the Insurance team who will send you a claim form and map.

Upon the return of your claim form, we will acknowledge your claim form within 21 days, all claims are assessed individually. The Insurance team will investigate the details of your claim and let you know the decision on liability within a further 90 days.
