Grass cutting and grounds maintenance

About this service

We are responsible for the cutting of grass on verges adjacent to rural roads that are maintained by us as Highway Authority.  Grass verges adjacent to urban roads are also maintained by us.

Grass verges on rural roads are generally cut at least twice a year.  The first cut usually starts at the end of May and takes about six weeks, and the second cut usually takes place in October, but the timing and number of these cuts depends on weather and growth.

At junctions and some other locations the visibility splays are cut more often for safety reasons.

The verges are cut in order to maintain visibility at junctions and bends, to prevent traffic signs being obscured, to control brushwood and scrub, to reduce the risk of fire, and to maintain and enhance the biodiversity of the verges where compatible with road safety.

There are 168 wildlife verge sites within the county with specified cutting regimes because of their ecological value. In addition there are verges in or adjacent to Sites of Special Scientific Interest which also need special consideration.

In urban areas the grass verges are cut more often for amenity reasons.

Grass cutting on most open spaces and verges along private roads is not our responsibility.

About this service

Wiltshire Council maintains approximately 650,000sqm of grass throughout the District. This ranges from small grass verges by the road side; public open spaces owned by Wiltshire Council; and private contracts such as schools and parish councils.

Grass that is cut on our own land is cut once a month from March to October. This is subject to seasonal variations and the old British weather. All such grass in not collected.

Private contracts are cut and maintained as required.

Not all grass is Wiltshire Council's responsibility.  Many areas are the responsibility of other landowners such as Housing Associations. Long stretches of roadside verges are usually cut by a separate contractor for Wiltshire Council.

Landscaping & Shrub Maintenance

As with grass cutting Wiltshire Council is only responsible for areas that it owns or undertakes as part of a private contract. All areas are attended once a month throughout the year.

If you are in any doubt as to who is responsible for cutting a particular area of grass or maintaining a shrub bed please call Environment & Amenity Services on (01380) 734665 or follow the link to fill out a Grass Cutting form.
