Street cleaning
The Council is responsible for the sweeping of streets and removal of litter.
The Council prides itself on keeping the streets of the towns and villages within the district clean and litter free. To do this we provide litter bins in public open spaces and on streets and pavements, mechanical street sweeping services and litter picking in towns and along major verges.

North
The Council's streets are divided into zones, depending on the volume of traffic using the streets each day. The more frequently the road is used, the more often it will be swept.
However, if the visual appearance of an area should deteriorate to an unacceptable level between cleans, it will be cleaned up within a certain time, as laid down in a Litter Code of Practice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Kennet District Council endeavors to keep the kerbs and street clear of litter - are there any areas where we are failing to do this ?
The Council, under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse, has a "duty to ensure that all land in its direct control which is open to the air and to which the public has access, is kept clear of litter and refuse, so far as is practicable".
The Council endeavour to mechanical sweeping of kerbed roads in villages and residential areas once every three months. Town centres are swept daily. Non-kerbed rural roads are swept on an "as and when necessary" basis rather than on a schedule. If between scheduled cleaning, land for which the Council is responsible falls below an acceptable cleanliness standard, additional cleaning will be undertaken.
If there is an area that you are concerned about because of the presence of litter and refuse please let us know

West
All roads and streets within West Wiltshire are swept on a regular basis. The Code of Practice for Litter & Refuse published by DEFRA in April 2006, provides guidelines on the standards of cleansing linked to the level of usage within an area. The code also provides guidelines on response times should an area fall below the required standard. Street sweeping schedules within West Wiltshire fulfil all requirements under the Code of Practice for Litter & Refuse.
Details on the Code of Practice for Litter & Refuse can be found on the DEFRA website.
Town centre roads within the five towns of Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham, Westbury and Warminster are swept on a daily basis, if required.
Access roads into these towns are swept on a weekly basis.
Other residential roads are swept on a regular cycle of around ten weeks.
Rural roads and villages are swept on a regular schedule. We undertake weekly inspections across all road types to ensure any areas that require attention are identified and action taken.
