Civil emergencies - gas pipelines

Summary of Service

The Pipeline Safety Regulations 1996 apply to pipelines carrying hazardous substances above specified pressures. The plans require the operator to supply information to the local authority in order for it to produce emergency response plans to any incident originating from the pipeline. This ensures that adequate arrangements are in place for dealing with incidents and emergencies involving a pipeline (oil, gas etc).

Details of Service

The Wiltshire Pipeline Plan produced by the Emergency Planning Unit details the coordinated response that would be required from the emergency services, the local authorities, National Grid (Gas) and all other organisations involved in protecting the public from the consequences of a release of natural gas originating from any of the pipelines which are situated in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire currently has 7 pipelines with an approximate total length of 110 Km. The plan covers all National Grid natural gas Major Accident Hazard Pipelines (MAHP) within Wiltshire and should ensure an effective and efficient response to any incident arising from National Grid natural gas MAHP.
