This is a service that the Building Control unit provide. It is administered under The Building Act 1984 (Sections 77 & 78).

Dangerous structures and buildings are ones which are likely to present a danger to members of the public. A typical example may be a badly leaning wall next to a public footpath, or impact damage to a building.

In almost all cases the owner of the building or structure will normally carry out the work of repair in conjunction with their insurance company.

We are often called in where the owner cannot do the work, cannot be found or where we are asked by the emergency services to give advice and guidance.

Our duty is the protection of the public. We will deal with a building that is an immediate danger if the owner is unable to do so.

If another body should deal with the danger, for example the Highways Agency or Network Rail, we will inform them. This is an emergency service that the Building Control team provide 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
