Shortcuts for planning policy

Planning policies guide our decisions on planning applications.

The local plan

The local plan sets out local planning policies and identifies how land is used, determining what will be built where.

In Wiltshire, the local plan includes the Wiltshire Core Strategy, Chippenham Site Allocations Plan, made Neighbourhood Plans, saved policies from district local plans and minerals and waste plans.

Wiltshire Core Strategy

The Wiltshire Core Strategy was adopted in January 2015. The Core Strategy replaces the South Wiltshire Core Strategy and many saved policies from former district local plans. You can view the Core Strategy, policies maps and associated documents through the link below.

Chippenham Site Allocations Plan

The Chippenham Site Alloctions Plan was adopted in May 2017. The Chippenham Site Allocations Plan sets the long term pattern and direction of growth for the town’s expansion. Its main purpose is to identify strategic mixed use sites for businesses, new homes and the infrastructure necessary to support them. More information on the Chippenham Sites Allocations Plan can be found by following the link below.

Draft Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan - Notice of consultation

Wiltshire Council has published the draft Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan, along with accompanying evidence reports, for formal consultation.

Comments are invited on the draft Plan and supporting evidence base documents during the 10 week consultation period, which runs from 9:00am on Friday 14 July 2017 until 5:00pm on Friday 22 September 2017.

For more information please follow this link to our Wiltshire Housing Site Allocations Plan webpage.

Neighbourhood planning

Neighbhourhood plans, when brought into force, become part of the statutory development plan for the area that they cover. Information about neighbourhood planning in Wiltshire can be found on the neighbourhood planning pages.

Saved policies from district local plans

Saved policies not replaced by the Wiltshire Core Strategy continue to be saved until replaced by policies in a subsequent plan. Appendix D to the Core Strategy lists the status of policies previously saved. You can view the former district local plans through the links below.

Minerals and waste plans

Minerals and waste policies for Wiltshire County and Swindon Borough sit within a separate suite of adopted plans, prepared on a joint basis with Swindon Borough Council. You can view the minerals and waste plans through the links below.

Other  documents

The Statement of Community Involvement (adopted July 2015) sets out the process and methods for community involvement for different types of plans and for different stages of plan preparation.

The Local Development Scheme (December 2016) sets out the timetable for producing or reviewing the local plan.
