A report on the Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) for the South Wiltshire area was published in May, 2009.
What is the purpose of the SHLAA?
This SHLAA will identify where housing could be provided, not just the main urban areas, to identify potential sites that could be developed or re-developed for housing or another use.
The SHLAA has been widened to include land for employment, retail, tourism, leisure or a mix of these uses. The study will identify potential sites, the sites’ unconstrained potential and any constraints that may exist. It will also make realistic assessments of brownfield land available and identify the actions that may be needed to be taken to make sites available, suitable and viable for development.
It will not make a judgement about whether a place would be appropriate for housing or not. If the strategic housing land availability assessment identifies land as having potential, it will not imply that the land will be allocated for development. We will be assessing the constraints and deciding whether sites should be developed as part of work on the Local Development Framework.
The SHLAA will form part of the evidence base that will inform the South Wiltshire Core Strategy.
