Village Design Statements emerged from work by the Countryside Commission, now Natural England in 1996. They are a form of planning guidance to inform the design of new development. Their aim is to encourage developers and householders to design new buildings or extensions (and other elements such as fences and outbuildings) so that they are in keeping with existing local character.

A key aspect of Village Design Statements is that they are written and researched by local communities, with only advisory input from the council, and so represent a community view of how new development should be designed in order to retain a sense of place.

Guidance on preparing a village design statement

Guidance on producing village design statements can be found in the former Countryside Commission's guidance booklet "Village Design - Making a Local Character Count in New Development (Part 1 and Part 2)".

Wiltshire Council has also produced guidance and a protocol on producing village design statements:

What is the status of village design statements?

Once approved by Council Committee, village design statements will become material planning considerations. This means that they are a consideration which the council must take into account when determining planning applications.

The following village design statements, sorted by former district area, are available to download from this page.
