The West Wiltshire District Plan 1st Alteration (2004) is the current local development plan for the west Wiltshire area of the county. The following documents are available to download from this page:

What is the status of the local plan?

The former West Wiltshire District Council adopted the West Wiltshire District Plan 1st Alteration in June, 2004.

Wiltshire Council has inherited the local plans produced by the former district councils in Wiltshire. These will remain in place until superseded by policies in the Wiltshire Core Strategy, which will be adopted in autumn 2012.

'Saved' policies within the local plans (see below) will be used to inform decisions on planning applications. The application of these policies will be based on the previous administrative boundaries to which they originally related.

'Saved' policies

On 26th September, 2009, the Secretary of State issued a direction setting out the policies within the West Wiltshire District Plan 1st Alteration (2004) that can be 'saved' beyond 26th September, 2009. These saved policies will remain relevant unless superseded by national guidance or until the adoption of the Wiltshire Core Strategy.

Copies of the direction, the schedule of saved policies, the accompanying letter from the Secretary of State, and a list of policies that have not been saved are available to download below.

The following saved policies have now been replaced by policies within the Leisure and Recreation DPD (Adopted February 2009) and no longer form part of the local development plan for the west Wiltshire area:

  • Policy R1 - Recreational Space (replaced by Policy LP3 of the Leisure and Recreation DPD)
  • Policy R2 - Protection of Recreational Space (replaced by Policy LP2)
  • Policy R3 - Dual Use of Educational Land (replaced by Policy SC1)
  • Policy R4 - Open Space in New Housing Developments (replaced by Policy LP4)
  • Policy R5 - Further Provision of Recreation Space (replaced by Policy LP5)
  • Policy R6 - Trowbridge Football Stadium (replaced by Policy OS2)
  • Policy R8 - Greenspace Network (replaced by Policy CR3)
  • Policy R9 - Country Parks (replaced by Policy CR2)
  • Policy R11 - Footpaths and Rights of Way (replaced by Policy CR1)
  • Policy R14 - Golf Courses (replaced by Policy LP5)
  • Policy R16 - Indoor Facilities (replaced by Policy IS1)
  • Policy CA1- Kennet and Avon Canal (replaced by Policy WR2)
  • Policy CA4 - Wilts and Berks Canal (replaced by Policy WR3)

Leisure and Recreation DPD

The West Wiltshire Leisure and Recreation DPD, adopted in February, 2009, provides additional recreational policies for the west Wiltshire area for the period up until 2016. This DPD will be replaced by policies in future Wiltshire-wide DPDs, including the Wiltshire Core Strategy.
