Summary of Service

Playing for Success/Bath Rugby Education Centre

Playing for Success (PfS) is a national initiative with some 150 centres across England. Locally, Wiltshire and Bath & North East Somerset Councils part-fund, along with the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) a 'state of the art' classroom which is situated within the main clubhouse of Bath Rugby ground.

Details of Service

The Bath Rugby Education Centre (Bath REC) has been set up to allow 10 -14 year old students, who are underachieving at school, to learn after school between 3.30 and 6.30pm. The centre offers high quality study support free of charge to Wiltshire and Bath and North East Somerset schools and aims to raise standards in literacy, numeracy and ICT. It has been proven to increase students' motivation, self esteem and confidence through fun and exciting activities using Bath Rugby's 1st team players, stadium and facilities. In turn, it allows Bath Rugby to strengthen their links between the club and the wider communities in which they operate.

Service aims

  • To offer 10-14 year students who are underachieving free study support
  • To raise those students' achievement in literacy, numeracy and ICT
  • To increase those students' self esteem and confidence
  • To improve those students' motivation to learn
  • To encourage those students to learn independently

What do we offer?

We work with primary and secondary schools across Wiltshire inviting them to select students to attend a six week PfS course at the Bath Rugby Education Centre. Sessions run each day during school term time between 3.30 and 6.30 p.m. after school between Monday and Thursday. Schools taking part select 16 students who are considered by teaching staff to be under achieving and once on the course they will receive 18 hours free study support at the Bath Rugby Education Centre over a period of 6 weeks.

How is the service accessed?

If a Wiltshire school is interested then they should contact the Bath Rugby Education Centre direct for further details.
