Smoking is still the biggest cause of preventable death and disease in England and stopping smoking is the single most important thing you can do to improve your health.

Using the Wiltshire Stop Smoking Service is the most effective way to quit smoking for good. With our help you will be up to four times more likely to succeed in quitting compared to trying it alone and going ‘cold turkey’.

Advice on quitting smoking

If you want help to stop smoking we provide free friendly, individual support and advice by qualified stop smoking advisors, at venues across the county including;

  • GP practices
  • participating pharmacies
  • MOD medical centres
  • certain libraries

While you are trying to give up smoking you will be supported by a stop smoking advisor. You will also be provided nicotine replacement therapy or other stop smoking medication, free if you are exempt from prescription charges.

Smokers with mental health issues

People with mental health issues can receive support to stop smoking from their surgery or participating pharmacy. Smokers with mental health issues tend to smoke more and have higher nicotine dependence. They will be offered a range of tailored treatments to stop smoking.

Smoking and pregnancy

We know that it can be difficult to quit smoking. But we also know that you want to give your baby the best possible start in life. No matter what stage you're at in your pregnancy, it's never too late to stop smoking. Speak to your midwife or local maternity unit for details of support available. Secondary care

As part of the admission procedure to Salisbury District Hospital, smokers who decide they would like to stop are offered referral to our stop smoking service. During their hospital stay smokers will be offered nicotine withdrawal management support using nicotine replacement therapy products to reduce nicotine cravings and make their hospital stay more comfortable. Patients who have an extended hospital stay and wish to stop smoking can get help and support from a trained advisor. Stop smoking support is also available to hospital staff on site. Referrals from the RUH Bath and GWH Swindon are also welcome and smokers can be supported before and/or after their hospital visit.

Training for professionals

The stop smoking service offers the following training courses:

  • PDFStop smoking practitioner training form Stop smoking practitioner training 280kb: 2 days course for those who can offer evidence based stop smoking support within their place of work or community setting.
  • Brief intervention training: 1 to 4 hours of training for health professionals and community workers to be able to effectively raise the question of smoking and sign post smokers to support services.
