Can I put diseased plant material in the garden waste bin?
Yes. The composting process reaches a standard that can destroy pathogens and the potential for seed to germinate.
Can I put branches in with my garden waste?
Prunings and trimmings are acceptable but unfortunately we will not be able to accept logs or branches unless they have been shredded as these cannot be composted (which is what happens to all garden waste once it has been collected).
Can I put leaves in with my garden waste?
Yes, you can put leaves in with your garden waste.
Why can’t I put vegetable peelings in with my garden waste?
Unfortunately the composting process prohibits vegetable peelings and kitchen waste at present due to the potential contamination from bacteria from other food products

What can go in the green bin?
The green bin is for compostable garden waste, such as:
- Bark
- Leaves
- Grass cuttings and weeds
- Plants
- Untreated sawdust and woodshavings
- Hedge Clippings
- Twigs and small branches
- Cut flowers
What cannot go in the green bin?
The following items are unsuitable for your green bin. Please do not put any of these items in to your green bin.
- Any food waste - because of Animal By-Products Regulations 2005
- Plastic bags, bin liners or biodegradable liners
- Seed trays or plant pots
- Cardboard
- Shredded paper
- Polystyrene or packaging
- Sticky tape, parcel tape, address labels or staples

If your green bin contains any of these items, your bin will be classed as contaminated and will not be collected. The collection crew will put a sticker on the top of your bin to let you know why your bin was not collected. You will need to remove the incorrect item(s) and the sticker, and your bin will be emptied on your next collection day. If you are unsure of what is wrong with your bin, please contact us on 01225 776655.
The waste collected from the green bins is made into compost in open windows.
Only waste contained in a green bin will be collected. Extra green waste over and above that which can be contained in the green bin can be taken to any of the Household Recycling Centres where they have green waste skips for composting.
